Gorinchem on the merwede a panorama from the sea of the city of gorinchem on the merwede river in the netherlands. Two windmills dot the shoreline, punctuated between by the tower of gorinchem grote kerk. Seagulls bring a sense of movement across the otherwise sparse upper left of the image. Following his third trip to the netherlands in 1888, a trip sponsored by his dealer robert dunthorne, wyllie had an exhibition “watercolours of the netherlands waterways” at the sign of the rembrandt head in vigo street, london. W. L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was a british marine artist. Born in london, wyllie painted, drew, and etched thames scenes throughout his life. He moved to portsmouth in 1907, where he continued working, supported the restoration of the victory and painted the trafalgar panorama. Early in his career wyllie was an illustrator for the graphic, and he became a member of the royal academy in 1907. Date: 1905. Dimensions: Sheet: 262 x 541 mm; Image: 160 x 458 mm; Mount: 407 mm x 557 mm. Collection: Fine art.
