Rubens was the official painter to members of the habsburg dynasty. He made a particular study of portraits of their great ancestor, the holy roman emperor charles v, by the sixteenth-century venetian painter titian, an artist he particularly admired. This canvas records titian’s first portrait of charles v (now lost). The emperor is depicted as a knight, in full armour. (permanent collection label). Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1603.
