Embothrium speciosissimum (Sowerby), James Sowerby, 1793

This is an image of a print of a hand coloured engraving by james sowerby (1757-1822), based on drawing nominally by john white but probably by the convict artist thomas watling. It appeared as tab. Iv in james edward smith's 1793 a specimen of the botany of new holland. The plant depicted was then known as embothrium speciosissimum, but is now telopea speciosissima (waratah). The accompanying text explains the figure thus: 1. A flower fully expanded. 2. 2. Antherae. 3. Germen. 4. Stigma 5. Follicle. 6. 6. Seeds. All of their natural size. Date: 1793.
