The portrait is unfinished. It is not dated in the 1980 catalogue. It is dated to the time between the dates of rotari’s arrival in russia (1756) and the execution of the engraving and the death of the empress (1761), probably closer to 1761, since it remained unfinished. Rotari painted elizabeth petrovna several times. After the artist’s death, five of her unfinished portraits remained in his studio. The portrait “in a black lace mantilla” was considered one of the best and, according to shtelin (shtelin 1990, p. 74), the most similar portraits of the empress. According to rovinsky, after the death of the empress the portrait belonged to count i. I. Shuvalov (rovinsky. Portraits, vol. 2, column 942). Engraved by e. P. Chemesov (1761).
