In view of the noble and elegant portrait with its cool blackish-grey colouring, one can understand the erroneous opinion of some researchers that ter borch was influenced by the art of velasquez. In the 19th century, this reserved portrait design was evidently perceived as sober and bare, and so the painting was decorated with furniture and equipment borrowed from ter borch's "more comfortable" portraits. The sitter was also decorated with a mayor's chain and the unsigned work was also given the ter borch monogram. In this falsified state, the portrait can be found in the "catalogue of 100 paintings" (sedelmeyer, paris) in 1902, in the gallery work of the hollitscher collection in 1912. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: circa 1660. Medium: oil on panel. Collection: Private collection. Gerard ter Borch - Portrait of a Mayor illustratedcatal00gale 2 0069
