Olympus: The Fall of the Giants, Francisco Bayeu y Subías, 1764

Sketch made in preparation for the ceiling fresco of the antechamber of the room of the princes of asturias of the royal palace of madrid. Bayeu was requested by mengs as court painter in 1762. Motifs based on homer, apollodorus, ovid and virgil. It represents the attack of the giants on olympus, defended by jupiter and other gods: mars, minerva, aeolus, saturn, pluto, rhea, proserpina, neptune and the demigod hercules. Typhon, leader of the giants, is struck down by a lightning bolt from jupiter, falls, and dies. The work presents stylistic influences of the composition and chromaticism of the late neapolitan baroque of corrado giaquinto; and a rigorous anatomical treatment and groupings of characters inspired by the neoclassicism of antonio mengs. Object Type: painting. Genre: mythological painting. Date: 1764. Place of creation: Spain. Dimensions: 68 x 123 cm. Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado.
