The birth of the virgin is represented with the mother and two of the sisters of queen margaret of austria. Mrs. María de baviera kneeling supports the virgin, behind her mrs. Leonora with the canvas and mrs. Catalina renata or mrs. Maria cistierna with a basket, in the background, santa ana is attended to by some ladies. Work signed and dated “jnº pantoja de la + faciebat / 1603”, it was commissioned together with its partner, the birth of christ (p1039), by queen margaret of austria, whose piety and marian devotion were well known, for her private oratory in the palace of valladolid.
