The work represents the birth of jesus christ, and is paired with the birth of the virgin (p1038), and both were made in 1603 for queen margaret's private oratory in the royal palace of valladolid, where the court was based in those years. In them you can see a mixture of sacred narration and daily life very characteristic of the golden age, since several of the characters who play the role of shepherds are members of the spanish royal family. Thus we see queen margaret on the right, standing, accompanied by her brothers ferdinand, leopold and maximilian ernest. The painter has made use of what at that time were called divine portraits, in a scene that, on the other hand, reminds us of the frequent interaction that existed in literature between the courtly or aristocratic world and the peasant world (text extracted from portús, j. : el arte en la españa del quijote, 2005, p. 154). Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1603. Dimensions: height: 260 cm (102.3 in) ; width: 172 cm (67.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado.
