Ein Neger saugt seinem englischen Herrn das Schlangengift aus der Wunde (1782), Bernhard Rode, 1782
Negro sucks the snake venom from his english master's wound (bernhard rode 1782). From a cycle of paintings for gut neuhaus (ostholstein) commissioned by friedrich von hahn (1742-1805). The picture "shows an englishman injured by a snake bite, from whose wound the negro who has rushed to his aid sucks the venom. The origin of the subject could not be determined. It seems to go back to an idea of rode or his client and reflects the attitude that was taken at the time towards the so-called 'savages'. Although they were generally regarded as an inferior race, they were not denied positive qualities, such as loyalty and devotion to their masters.
