Jesus in emmaus. This painting was part of a request from the "amtmand" (bailiff) of the western province of iceland, bjarni thorsteinsson, for bells and an altar-piece for the church of bjarnarhöfn, sent december 19, 1829. Christoffer wilhelm eckersberg was chosen as painter, but his first proposal, from june 1831, was rejected for being too costly. After some deliberations, the danish king frederik approved an altar-piece at the same price in september 1832, and eckersberg finished it in the spring of 1833. A new church was built in 1857 and a story evolved around the altar-piece, making it a work of a dutch master from the rembrandt school around 1640, brought to iceland in the 17th century by dutch sailors. A good story - but just a story. Object Type: painting. Date: 1833. Medium: oil on panel. Collection: Bjarnarhöfn church, Snæfellsnes. Eckersberg, CW - Kristus i Emmaus - 1833
