Dutch coast scene, possibly to the west of Scheveningen RMG PV5208, circa 1655

Dutch coast scene, possibly to the west of scheveningen formerly tentatively attributed to willem van de velde, the younger, this unsigned drawing is now believed to be study related to simon de vlieger’s paintings of the beach at scheveningen, including the nmm’s bhc0774. This drawing, which is pencilled on the back for tracing, shows a beach scene with vessels floating in the water, some figures wading in the shallows and yet more people scattered at intervals along the shoreline. The composition is arch-shaped, the horizon low and the sky sprawling, broken up by a series of distinct vertical lines. The tower of the church of scheveningen stretches into the sky on the far right. Dutch coast scene, possibly to the west of scheveningen. Date: circa 1655. Dimensions: Mount: 79 mm x 212 mm. Collection: Fine art.
