In the street at night, three figures form a circle, each holding a sword: to left, mephistopheles parries valentine's blow, thereby allowing faust to pierce valentine, to right, through the torso; on the ground lies mephistopheles' guitar, which he used to serenade marguerite (gretchen); to left a house (probably marguerite's) while further, other buildings and a well. 1827 lithograph.
