Illustration by poul steffensen from the danish novel dronningens vagtmester by carit etlar which takes place during the dano-swedish war in 1658-1660. Svend poulsen, gøngehøvdingen, and his gønger are on their way from the gjorslev castle to isefjord with the noble woman elsebeth buchwald, her daughter karen kaas og the nephew holger rud who are fleeing from the swedes. After a long ride they arrives at the hut of the fisherman david to stay for the night. At some point a gønge comes inside and tells them to put out the light as a swedish officer is coming near. Svend poulsen (app. 1610 - app. 1679, standing at the left) was a real person but the story is fiction. The look of svend poulsen is also fantasy as there is no known portraits of him. Date: Original illustration from the 1890s, here reprint from 1909..
