Antiquities of the russian country, 1846-1853. V. 1. Illustrator - solntsev, fyodor grigorievich knife, sheath, purse of st. Sergius, located in the trinity-sergius lavra, and an ancient wooden bowl, or stand a knife with a handle made of wood, apparently apple and with a bone frame on the end; its cloth sheath shows that the holy elder carried it with him on the road at his belt, which is what villagers do to this day. But will an axe be famous without one who chops it? this great ascetic, combining labor with prayer, did carpentry with an axe in order to earn himself a piece of stale bread from a fellow worker; probably, he used his knife not only for sharing his bread with the poor, but also for cutting spoons and other tableware, and thereby set an example of industry, which the troitsky elders followed. In 1619, they presented wooden bratinas, stakes and ladles of their own making to the patriarch of constantinople theophanes, and in 1676 to the patriarchs of alexandria paisius and antioch macarius, who visited the holy monastery of st. Sergius. They sent similar utensils to the tsars and tsarinas. The monastery product, which passed into the posad, gave rise to the industry of wooden tableware, which was bought by pilgrims. Of the tableware, burl spoons and cups, which were carved from birch bolon, or vyplyvka, were especially famous there. The wooden stake, or cup, similar to a bratina, depicted here, belongs to such cell products; at the table every elder had his own stand: every elder, every stand. In one of his sermons, metropolitan platon, referring to these monuments of st. Sergius, says: “these vestments in which he performed the sacred rite, this spoon, this knife, which served his bodily needs, this staff, which supported his old age and weakness, in their appearance have nothing precious or flattering, but in their interior they are more precious than any pearls and precious stones - they are sanctified by his sweat and gilded by his virtuous exploits. And therefore, as if animated, they all loudly cry out: “christians! not in gold and silver, but in virtue and piety place your wealth. ”. Date: 1846—1853.
