Antiquities of the russian country, 1846-1853. V. 1. Illustrator — solntsev, fyodor grigorievich altar gospel of the late 14th century (image 1) this charatean gospel in quire, written according to the rule, is bound in velvet; its upper board is covered with gilded silver with filigree, along the edges there are rims of the same metal with enamel images of saints ephraim, savva, euthymius, nicholas of myra, three ecumenical hierarchs, one of moscow’s peter, and leonty and saint sergius of rostov. The following inscription is carved along the edges of the front board: в лtто /--з`ц (1392) мар. Indiction, it was bound by evaglya during the time of the great prince vasily dmitrievich of all russia and his grace cyprian, metropolitan of kiev of all russia, by order of the servant of god feodor andrevich. The latter name is found in 1371 and 1389 between the letters of the spiritual testament of grand duke dmitry ivanovich. On the first page of the gospel we read the handwritten signature of metropolitan platon: “this gospel was given by the great prince vasily dmitrievich, signed by the humble platon, metropolitan of moscow and archimandrite of the trinity-sergius lavra, 1798. ” but from the first inscription it is not evident that it was given to the sergius monastery by the grand duke himself, but only during his reign it was arranged by order of feodor andreevich, who was a moscow boyar and probably a brother of the boyars who bore witness to the spiritual grand duke's rule, alexander and another feodor alexandrovich. Although this inscription directly indicates to us the year 1392 when the gospel cover was arranged, this is contradicted by the image of st. Sergius on it, who died in the same year, and his holy relics were discovered and glorified in 1425. From this we can conclude with certainty that during the later renewal and decoration of the cover, the image of the venerable founder of the trinity lavra was added. Date: 1846—1853.
