Helmet of yaroslav vsevolodovich (half mask is non-historical) "lehyaniye motsyaravu lvemu vshe, in velka lekhya arch and stran ati knizhe". Helmet of grand prince yaroslav vsevolodovich this iron helmet is covered with chased silver gilded plaques, on which the archangel michael is depicted in front with a scepter (staff) and orb in his hands; around him is an inscription in niello: great archangel of the lord michael, help your servant theodore. On the pedestal of the helmet are the faces of the savior with the inscription: is. Chr.;agi (agios) theodore; agi geshrh; agi vasili. On the crown of the longitudinal plaque in figures are depicted eagles, falcons and winged animals, completely similar to those depicted on ancient embroidered wallpaper, representing the campaign of harald, sent by edward, king of england, to william, duke of normandy, with a will for the throne of england. This helmet was found in 1808 together with chain mail (fig. 4, b) in the vladimir province, several miles from yuryev-polsky, in the forest, under a tree stump. By its shape, by the iron eaten away by rust and by the scalding chain mail, it must have belonged to ancient times. The late emperor alexander i ordered the then president of the academy of arts olenin to investigate to whom this ancient helmet could have belonged. Olenin, correlating the locality where it was found with historical legends about battles, explained that in that very place in 1216 there was the lipetsk battle for the inheritance of the vladimir grand duchy between the sons of grand duke vsevolod, constantine and george; for the first stood mstislav the bold, for the second yaroslav (in holy baptism fyodor) vsevolodovich. Mstislav won, yaroslav and george fled from the battlefield, throwing off all their weapons. Comparing the inscription around the coat of arms of the archangel michael with the event of 1216, there is no doubt that the helmet belonged to prince fyodor vsevolodovich. This conclusion can be confirmed by the fact that the helmet, by its shape and by its decorations with the above-mentioned norman-style coinage, was probably made in novgorod during the reign of yaroslav there. In addition, it should be noted that the chain mail was rolled up and in this position boiled from rust, hidden under a tree during yaroslav's flight, when mstislav, moving from pereyaslavl, went around his regiments and, striking from the rear, defeated and forced them to flee to pereyaslavl through the thicket that separated the combatants. Date: before 1853.
