Antiquities of the russian state. — m. : type. Alexander semen, 1851. — section iv. — pp. 13-14. (spelling modernized) image of archimandrite dionysius of the trinity lavra of st. Sergius this portrait, painted on canvas with oil paints, has been preserved in the bishop's chambers of the trinity lavra of st. Sergius, and its counterpart is on korbukh, in the gethsemane church built by st. Dionysius. The famous associate of pozharsky, minin and palitsyn, great in love for the fatherland and humble sufferer for the truth, is depicted in a phelonion, which bishops wore at that time, and in a mitre, which the bishops gave to a few archimandrites as a sign of special mercy. Around his head is a crown. In one hand dionysius holds the abbot's staff, in the other a rosary. Above his face you read the following inscription: "the image of dionysius archimandrite of troitsky. " the decoration and execution of the face are satisfactory; its frame is beautiful and pleasant; its features express the character of humility and mercy, with which he marked his difficult life. These features are justified by the words of his biographer, who testifies that "his face was handsome, his eyes and lips were cheerful, as if laughing. " "god added to his prudence," he continues, "vigor and strength, decorum and beauty of face, and bodily age, for no one else in those years was found like him; his beard was long and wide - and the hair of his beard was blond; his eyes were cheerful. " comparing the image of dionysius with a contemporary description, we find a similarity between the two and confirmation that the portrait was taken from life and, perhaps, one of those that many monastery zographers copied from the deceased, “so that such a blessed man would forever remain in everyone’s memory. ” only, according to the story of his biographer, “his beard was wide and long even to the navel,” but in the portrait it is shortened, probably so that it would not cover the vestments. Date: Portrait: probably 17th century, Reproduction: 1851.
