Paper (silk) hat in the introduction to the description of the objects of section iii we mentioned the kuyaks, or mongolian wadded cuirasses, which existed in the armoury treasury, consisting of iron plates, fixed with nails in the wadded padding between the upper silk or cloth cover and the lining. Not a single kuyaks proper has survived, but three quilted hats of asian workmanship have survived, containing kuya iron plates inside. So-called noses in the form of lowering iron latches, of rough workmanship, are sewn onto them in front, but these hats cannot be included in the samples of ancient russian armour; in the inventory of the armoury chamber they are among the shishaks (no. 82) and are called quilted. They are not mentioned in old inventories, unless they are classified as kalmyk shishaks, sewn, covered with worm-shaped velvet, green, etc. Date: before 1853.
