Dorothea Meyer, chalk drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1525–26

Dorothea Meyer, chalk drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1525–26

Portrait of dorothea meyer, née kannengiesser. Black and coloured chalks on white-primed paper, lead point and scored lines on the contours, 39. 5 × 28. 1 cm, kunstmuseum basel. Although hans holbein went on to become a prolific and renowned portraitist in london, he produced relatively few portraits in basel. Jakob meyer zum hasen, a senior official and sometime mayor of basel, became one of his most important early patrons, and holbein first drew him and his wife, dorothea, in silverpoint in 1516. This later portrait is a preparatory drawing for the work known as the darmstadt madonna, which portrays jakob meyer with his family and the madonna and child. Meyer's first wife, magdalena baer (d. 1511), is also included. The scored lines on the drawing show that holbein traced it directly onto the panel. (stephanie buck, hans holbein, cologne: könemann, 1999, isbn 3829025831, pp. 76–82; müller, p. 334. ). Date: c. 1525–26.
