The Royal Visit to the Fleet IV, Dominic Serres, 1775

The Royal Visit to the Fleet IV, Dominic Serres, 1775

This is one of four paintings by serres recording george iii’s visit to inspect the british fleet, from 22 to 26 june 1773 (om 1072-5, 404558-61). The four paintings of the series divide into two imposing celebrations of the fleet (number i and this one) and two depictions of what almost looks like a yacht race (numbers ii and iii). This picture, the fourth and final image of the series, shows another assemblage of the entire fleet, possibly the moment in the afternoon of 24 june when vice-admiral thomas pye was promoted to admiral of the blue and hoisted his flag on the royal oak, which is seen here, centre left, receiving the salute of the fleet, watched by crowds assembled on the decks; smaller yachts, carrying spectators, are seen in the foreground. Signed and dated d serres / 1775. Object Type: painting. Date: 1775. Dimensions: height: 153.4 cm (60.3 in) ; width: 245.7 cm (96.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Royal Collection.
