Napoleon iii accompanied by a minister and two generals, visiting by boat the victims of tarascon during the flood of may-june 1856. “communications between this city and avignon are completely interrupted, following the rupture of the railways which the waters of the rhône have cut at several points. His majesty crossed in a boat, in the middle of flooded fields, a space of five kilometers which separated him from tarascon. The emperor, deeply moved, traveled in his boat through the streets of this city entirely invaded by water, and distributed consolations and relief to the inhabitants who had taken refuge in the upper floors of their houses.
