Portrait of the spanish sailor cayetano valdés (1767-1835), who became the 17th captain general of the royal spanish navy. In 1809 he was promoted to lieutenant general and was named captain general of cádiz. The portrait was made in seville in 1847, commissioned by the naval museum of madrid, and the sitter appears half-length and from the front, wearing the small uniform of a captain general and director general of the navy. And it sports the bands and plaques of the great crosses of the orders of san fernando and san hermenegildo and the scallop of a knight of the order of malta.
