John Bull and the alarmist, James Gillray, 1 September 1803

Satire on the fear of french invasion, 1794-1805. (british political cartoon); the alarmist is richard brinsley sheridan, caricatured as a bill-sticker warning of imminent french invasion. John bull is depicted surrounded by loyalist and royalist symbols, and contemptuous of napoleon. The bills carried and posted by sheridan refer to the alleged napoleonic atrocities in the egyptian campaign of 1798 and to sheridan's own 'address to the people,' the patriot speech from his play 'pizarro', reprinted as a handbill in 1803.
