Iohn Bull threatened by insects from all quarters!!, George Murgatroyd Woodward, August 1807

Satire on the napoleonic wars. (british political cartoon); john bull, as a sailor, sits atop a barrel of grog, brandishing a cutlass and pistol at the insects representing britain's enemies or potential enemies, including the united states. Britain seized the danish fleet at copenhagen on 7 sept. , 1807. The ground beneath john bull's feet is labelled the tight little island, after the song in the british raft of 1797-8 by thomas john dibdin (1771-1841). Also on the ground is a ballad sheet of rule britannia.;bmc states no imprint, and gives conjectural date of oct. 1807; artist and etcher conjectured by bmc. Date: August 1807.
