Empress anna ioannovna (1693–1740), daughter of peter i’s half-brother tsar ivan alekseevich, and duchess of courland by marriage. From 1730, she was the russian empress. Her image reproduces the type of formal imperial portrait that emerged in european art in the 17th century during the baroque era. The artist places the figure of the empress in a palace interior, carefully recording all the attributes of power: a magnificent coronation dress with an ermine mantle thrown over it, a crown, a scepter, and an orb on a velvet pillow. The large, heavy figure of anna ioannovna dictates a monumental composition to the artist. The model’s appearance bears little resemblance to her life appearance. Princess n. B. Dolgorukaya wrote about anna ioannovna: “…she was terrifying to look at, had a repulsive face, she was so tall when she walked among the cavaliers, her head was taller than all of them and she was extremely fat. ”.
