To atone for the insolence of her mother who claimed to be more beautiful than the nereids, andromeda is offered as a sacrifice to a sea monster, which approaches from the left. The cruel impassivity of the daughters of nereus is opposed by the terror of the victim, who will be delivered by the hero perseus. The painting was exhibited at the salon of 1841.
