This depiction of the seven works of mercy according to matthew 25; 31-46 shows the feeding of the hungry, the giving of water to the thirsty, the clothing of the naked, the visitation of prisoners and the sick, and the hospitality of the homeless and strangers. It is a direct successor to a series of paintings by pieter brueghel the younger with the same composition, which were extremely popular in his time (cf. , among others, the composition in the ulm bread museum, dated 1616; see ertz, 2000, no. 383, fig. 275, p. 409). This is based on a mirror-image drawing by his father, pieter brueghel the elder, from 1559, now in the boijmans-van beuningen museum in rotterdam, which has been handed down in an engraving by philip galle. Varies the composition of the father by giving the figures individualized facial features, emphasizing the raggedness of the garments and reducing the nudity of some figures in the foreground.
