The marble parapet in front of the portrait serves as a repoussoir to create a greater sense of depth. Because of his long red robe over a white shirt, the stole ("becho") over his right shoulder and the characteristic black "beret", the sitter has been identified as a senator. His youth is in stark contrast to this depiction and indicates that the sitter belongs to the venetian noble family of the emo, since the picture came to the museum in 1864 from the estate of the emo capodilista. Object Type: painting, panel painting. Genre: portrait. Date: between circa 1480 and circa 1510. Dimensions: height: 35 cm (13.7 in) ; width: 26.4 cm (10.3 in). Medium: oil on panel.
