Drawing by william alexander, draughtsman of the macartney embassy to china in 1793. A funeral procession in china. The leader of the procession is a priest, who carries a lighted match, with tin-foil and crackers, to which he sets fire when passing a temple or other building for sacred purposes. Following are four musicians with gongs, flutes and trumpets; two persons holding banners; two mourners and a distressed relative. The coffin is carried by four men. A horse-driven carriage containing three females is at the end of the funeral procession. Image taken from the costume of china, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings, published in london in 1805. Date: circa 1800.
