A FISHING BOAT, William Alexander, circa 1800

Drawing by william alexander, draughtsman of the macartney embassy to china in 1793. A fishing boat in a canal with a view of the lake poo-yang in the background. The boat possesses an elaborate contrivance for raising nets which is employed by two fishermen, other are consuming their dinner. On the left, on a levee, there are seen mounds of earth, which were used to repair the canal breaches. Image taken from the costume of china, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings, published in london in 1805. Date: circa 1800.
