A flagship being driven on the rocks to the left, a port broadside view of a ship lifting to a heavy sea, drifting stern first on to two jagged rocks on the right, with another ship in the distance. Van de velde, the younger produced numerous paintings of the same subject, for which this drawing may be a compositional study, or perhaps a record of an executed work.
