A fighting vessel, probably a destroyer, under way at sunset
this appears to be a starboard-quarter view of a relatively small twin-funnelled warship heading into the rear right distance. The only ships in the royal navy that fit this general impression (two large funnels, no superimposed guns, block bridge, pole masts, platform aft) are destroyers of the yarrow 'm', thornycroft 'm', admiralty modified 'r' and thornycroft 's' classes. Wyllie has suggested a distant coast with high land, possibly scotland. Date: probably 1914-18. Dimensions: 253 mm x 352 mm. Collection: Fine art.
