A Coastal View, Grande Rocque RMG BHC0014, John Everett, 1911

A coastal view, grande rocque a sketch showing the sun setting on the sea and rocks at grand rocque, guernsey, channel islands, shown from a low viewpoint. The artist has concentrated on the use of colour to indicate the effects of the sun low on the horizon. It is shown in the bottom third of the sky as a bright sphere with the surrounding sky glowing a vivid orange, pink and yellow. The rest of the sky is thinly painted and shown in various tones of lilac and blue, contrasting in texture with the thicker impasto effect of the sea. There is a great deal of movement in the foreground, with the waves shown crashing against the rocks. The painting was done on the spot while everett was staying in guernsey for three months between 12 january and march 1937. He rented a studio on the cliffs at grande rocque with a view directly out to sea, and produced a large number of seascapes during his time there. The painting is inscribed 'grand rocques' verso. A coastal view. Date: 1911. Dimensions: Painting: 250 x 354 mm. Collection: Oil paintings.
