Study of a Seated Girl, Edward Burne-Jones

Study of a Seated Girl, Edward Burne-Jones

Despite the date (lower right) this drawing was probably executed around 1865 as it reflects burne-jones’ new interest in classical sculpture, and in particular the seated deities from the athenian parthenon which he copied at the british museum. This marks the beginning of burne-jones’ fascination with the fall of drapery from the female figure. The chalk gives the composition a soft, ethereal feel that is indicative of his move towards aestheticism. (see references). Date: 1860 and reworked circa 1890. Dimensions: height: 11 in (27.9 cm); width: 8.5 in (21.5 cm) frame: height: 20.7 in (52.7 cm); width: 17 in (43.1 cm). Medium: graphite on paper, white chalk. Collection: Delaware Art Museum.
