A boat taking a line from a ship to a dolphin this drawing belongs to a group of compositional studies that combine pencil drawing with a loose, light wash. In the right foreground two men in a boat tie a line, leading from a small ship in the middle distance, to a wooden mooring, or dolphin. Another rowing boat approaches the ship as other vessels lie becalmed in the distance. The drawing is inscribed twice in the sky: ‘l’ to indicate the direction of the light. A boat taking a line from a ship to a dolphin. Date: circa 1665. Dimensions: Primary support: 95 mm x 152 mm; Mount: 316 mm x 481 mm. Collection: Fine art.
