52 History of the Russian state in the image of its sovereign rulers, Vasily Vereshchagin, 1896

Tsar vasily ivanovich shuisky. 1606-1610. Having strenuously sought the royal throne, shuisky, having achieved it in a troubled time of mental ferment and with impostors constantly appearing, was unable to hold on to the throne, despite the support of sweden, the firmness of the defense of the sergius lavra and the heroism of skopin-shuisky. He was forcibly tonsured a monk by a party of dissatisfied boyars. Date: 1896.
