Modigliani was a prolific draftsman of figures and faces who often used his friends and colleagues as models. In this characteristically reductive study he exploits the tension between text and image, spelling out the sitter's first name in a stacked column of letters that reinforces the expressive elongation of mateo's nose, chin, and neck.
