Motherhood, Stanisław Wyspiański, 1905

Motherhood, Stanisław Wyspiański, 1905

The pastel called "wife with helenami" by the artist in his sketch was created on the basis of the portrait of teofila breastfeeding her son staś from 1902 (currently in the collection of the national museum in warsaw). Three years later, wyspiański expanded the composition with the figure of helenka's daughter, shown in two shots straight ahead and in profile, and scaled leaves and flowers of geraniums in the background. On december 2, 1901, in an apartment on krowoderska street, the last child of the wyspiański family - stanisław - was born. The birth of his youngest son became an inspiration for the artist for paintings dedicated to his immediate family, wife and children, including: motherhood, purchased and donated to the collections of the national museum in krakow by feliks jasieński. Object Type: pastel. Date: 1905. Place of creation: Poland. Dimensions: height: 58.8 cm (23.1 in); width: 91 cm (35.8 in). Medium: pastel on paper. Collection: National Museum in Kraków. Macierzynstwo 1905
