Portrait of Augusta Louise zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1753-1835), Jens Juel, 1780

Auguste countess of stolberg (1753-1835), married to andreas peter count bernstorff since 1783. Oil painting by jens juel. This sister of the counts of stolberg, who were friends of goethe, turned to the poet, moved by "werther", who wrote her letters that were most revealing to his inner life (until 1782), without them ever seeing each other. Goethe responded to her attempt at conversion with one of his most wonderful letters. She became known through her lively correspondence with the poet and thinker johann wolfgang von goethe and went down in literary history as goethe's gustchen. Date: 1780. Medium: oil. Collection: Unidentified location. Augusta Louise zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1753-1835)
