The painter luis de la cruz y ríos (1776-1853) appears wearing the uniform of secretary of the chamber and wearing the cross, plaque and band of the order of the golden spur, which was awarded to him by pope pius vii, in addition to the commander's plaque of the order of charles iii and the ordinary commendation of the order of isabella the catholic. In this work the painter's desire to see his merits recognized at the court of king ferdinand vii is evident. Thus, far from appearing in his work clothes or in civilian clothes, the canary islands artist wanted to go down to posterity in this mature image as a prominent palatine official, with the appearance almost of a distinguished diplomat, dressed in a rich uniform with striking embroidery and filled with the decorations that he accumulated throughout his career, although most of them were granted to him for protocol reasons, and the position of royal secretary was only held on an honorary basis, without him ever reaching nor to ever exercise it. However, in addition to the decorations that he shows on this canvas, throughout his career he received the appointments of count of the sacred pontifical palace and knight of the order of saint michael in the kingdom of france.
