The Spanish Caravan, Romeyn de Hooghe, 1702

Title page to a tract entitled "de spaansche carravaan", no. 32 in the series entitled "esopus in europa"; in the centre, an etching showing a spaniard, with spectacles and a ruff, cowering beside his ass laden with baggage: a portrait of "his whore", a backgammon board, a close-stool, a guitar, a sword, a dagger, a chocolate pot. On the ground a tortoise is followed by a snail; a soldier-, or hermit-crab retreats into its shell. The spaniard is shown again on a hilltop beyond, raising his arms in fear, his ass running away without baggage; a mounted knight in armour appears on the right; behind is a large fortress. 1702 etching with letterpress printed in black ink.
