The assassination attempt on rebel leader patrona halil, 1730
the extravagant parties of the 'tulip sultan' caused a lot of unrest among the population. On september 28, 1730, a rebellion broke out led by patrona halil, an albanian sailor. The rebels succeeded in deposing the sultan and installed his nephew mahmud i. After mahmud i ascended the throne, the rebels continued to cause unrest. They tried to gain positions in the government and demanded more and more influence. Mahmud invited them to the palace with an excuse, where they were killed one by one. On the right, patrona halil is overpowered, while on the left the servant who was looking after his horse has already been killed. In the center the grand vizier damad ibrahim pasha is seen emerging from his palace, accompanied by one of the chief judges and one of the treasurers. The admiral and the other chief justice emerge from the other door, while on the left an officer of the guard gives orders to a group of janissaries in military fatigues. In the background one can still see how the grand vizier's servants are being slaughtered. This brought the uprising to a definitive end. Collection: paintings; vanmour series. Object Type: painting.
