Fanny cornforth, rossetti's mistress, modelled for the woman in the picture. A farmer bringing his calf to market in london at dawn comes across a woman he once loved. She has become a prostitute and tries to hide. The calf trapped in the cart symbolises the past and present life of the woman. Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1854.
