The great calas. In a vaulted dungeon, lit by a hanging lantern, calas sits in the middle, facing right, comforting his children, one of whom is kneeling at his feet on the left, embracing him, while the second, who stands next to him, embraces him in grief, leaning her head against his head; in front of him the son, kissing the father's outstretched right hand, whose left hand points to the mother to recommend her continued love for the children. On the right, the dungeon master kneels and opens the lock of the chain on the right foot of the unfortunate victim of justice; to the right, behind, the unconscious wife sits in a wicker chair. The family friend, the young lavaysse, pours strengthening water on a cloth that the old, faithful maid is holding in her hand. To the left of the open dungeon door, on the sides of which two soldiers are standing, two monks enter. (description according to source).
