Title page to a tract entitled "de groote christofel", no. 38 in the series entitled "esopus in europa"; in the centre, an etching showing louis xiv as a giant figure of st christopher dressed in a loin cloth and holding a staff from which explosions come. He carries on his shoulder philip of anjou and, under his arm, the old pretender (both shown as small children); an eagle (the empire) swoops down from the left to grasp anjou's crown while other birds catch in their beaks coins which fall from a bag clutched alongside the preetender. On the left, a plainly dressed woman sits beside a pile of money bags, holding a lantern which projects a beam towards louis; behind her coins fall from the mouth of a man (the french taxpayer) who is being squeezed in a press surmounted with a fleur-de-lis by two tax-gatherers. On the right, two elegantly dressed women (royal courtesans) stand on the river bank; in the far distance, a large crowd appears to cry out for aid or in protest. 1702
