Athalie interrogeant Joas, Charles-Antoine Coypel, 1741

Athalie interrogeant Joas, Charles-Antoine Coypel, 1741

This work presents itself to the viewer as a theater scene. The bare decor, framed by heavy curtains, highlights the face to face between the two main characters: athalie, the cruel queen who usurped the throne, and joas, the innocent child who is in fact the legitimate heir to the kingdom. The expression of feelings is particularly emphasized through the gestures and position of the characters. Presented at the salon of 1741, this painting met with great success: king louis. Object Type: painting. Date: 1741. Dimensions: height: 129 cm (50.7 in) ; width: 163 cm (64.1 in). Collection: Brest’s Museum of Fine Arts. Coypel Athalie interroge Joas
