Winterhalter, court portraitist to king louis philippe and emperor napoleon iii, gained particular popularity during the second empire (1852-1870), working exclusively for the upper classes of the european aristocracy. One of winterhalter's hermitage portraits features olga esperovna shuvalova (1838-1869), born princess beloselskaya-belozerskaya, wife of pyotr andreyevich shuvalov, adjutant general and chief of the gendarme corps. Shuvalova's fragile figure literally "drowns" in a cascade of lush folds of an exquisite dress. Although the artist did not set himself the task of revealing the psychological character of the model, the strict features of shuvalova's thoughtful face suggest the intelligence, modesty and restraint of a representative of one of the oldest families in russia.
