A portrait of field marshal sir claude john eyre auchinleck gcb gcie csi dso obe (21 june 1884 – 23 march 1981), who was commander-in-chief of the indian army in early 1941, followed by c-in-c of the middle east theatre in july 1941. In june 1943 he was again appointed c-in-c india, responsible for the organisation of supply, maintenance and training for slim's fourteenth army.
