Hawaiian natives wearing kihei, with animals, manuscript sketch by louis choris. The dog in the center has been claimed as the only extant image of a hawaiian poi dog by margaret titcomb. "the small dog, middle rear, may have had more hawaiian than foreign blood. " this assessment is supported by anthropologist katharine luomala who noted: "the large dog at the left looks foreign. The smaller dog by the pig somewhat recalls the odd creature in figures 7 and 8 [other polynesian dogs]. ". Date: between 1816 and 1817.
