Tab. Lxxxii. Historical ideas. Continued. The exterior of st. Peter's church; 504 feet high, 424 feet wide and 570 feet deep, of corinthian order. The buildings, which stand out straight on both sides, are continued by two circular colonnades, of doric order. In the middle is a magnificent pyramid, 130 palms high, hewn from a piece of rock in egypt, and erected here by sixtus v through the architect fontana. To the right of the church is the vatican. The pope blesses the catholics in a large assembly and condemns all heretics with the words: just as i throw this burning torch out of the window, so god will also reject the heretics. He is in this position on the balcony above the middle door. (description according to source). Date: 1774.
